Donacious - The Food listing/donation app to reduce food waste

fight food waste by sharing with technologies

Problem: Hong Kong has generated 1,333 tonnes of food waste daily in 2017, many of these were just few days past their expiry date. Meanwhile, there are around 1.35 million people who are living in poverty and struggle to make ends meet.

Solution: Unearthing the concept of local apartment complex community that shares tools and food during the 50s to the 70s, and adapt that concept in the digital age by creating an app that allows users to share and donate food.

This is where we got the name Donacious, a portmanteau of “Donate” and “Delicious”. We aim to solve two primary problem at once by building a share economy.

Users can make a list of what they are about to donate. Whether they have leftovers that they simply cooked too much, or have foods that are about to expire but don’t have time to cook. They can “donate” to them via Donacious. The process is simple: Take a photo, add a description, and it’s done. The food can be “processed” in two ways: the donator can either ask the recipient to pick up the food at the doorstep or donate it to one of its drop-off points. The former is targeted towards other Donacious users, who are more tech-savvy. The latter option is geared more towards the charity side, as the recipient is much more in need to make ends meet.
