Adrian and the Numericorns
A fast paced platforming edutainment game that teaches children maths
Most of the video games on the market are entertainment-oriented and offers little to no educational value. Meanwhile, most edutainment games lean towards the education side and have low entertainment value. There is a difference to be bridged and a potential market to make a fun and educational game.
Adrian and the Numericorns was created under the pretense. This is a fast-paced edutainment game that aims to educate children 4-8 years old mathematics, which has been traditionally a subject that many found themselves struggling in. The main objective of this project is to design with empathy by creating a children's learning app that is engaging and educational at the same time. The game plays is similar to regular mobile side-scrolling platformers such as Super Mario Run; where the character runs automatically, and the player controls the jumping of the character to collect coins. These coins can be used to buy powerups to aid the player, or outfits to change the appearance of Adrian.
The edutainment aspect lies in the boss battle of the game. In the boss battle of this game, there will be a UFO that displays the question, and three containers will be flying in from the right side of the screen that contains the answer. The player needs to time their jumps to hit the container that has the correct answer in it to deal damage to the boss. This makes the learning process more engaging by adding an additional layer of the challenge of reflex to get to the correct answer.
